I have heard the World Land Trust described as the environmentalist's environmental charity and I can understand why. One of its patrons is Sir David Attenborough and among its trustees, council and supporters are some of the UK's leading conservationists and naturalists. More to the point, it is one of those charities that just gets on and does it.

Although relatively small, the Trust has helped purchase and protect over 500,000 acres of threatened habitats in Asia, Central and South America, Africa and Europe.

All this has been achieved by a small staff from offices in the rural town of Halesworth, Suffolk. Indeed, one of the reasons why I think many people donate to the Trust is the fact that they are able to keep their overheads to a minimum and don’t waste a penny of the money they raise.

It was certainly the automatic choice when we were looking for a charity to support. Several of us had donated to the Trust in the past and my co-founder, Jonathan, is a trustee. We now donate 1% of our total monthly sales to the Trust.

We are also hoping to inspire our customers to make direct donations to the World Land Trust. In particular, please consider saving an acre of rainforest – or some other endangered habitat – in perpetuity for £100 (or half an acre for £50). You can do this using a credit card on the WLT website 24 hours a day.

Save an acre of rainforest for just £100

The World Land Trust (WLT) takes direct action to save tropical forests and other wilderness land: by buying it, acre by acre. Current projects include:

Ecuador

80% of Ecuador's tropical forests are already gone so WLT is working with project partners Nature and Culture International (NCI), Fundación Jocotoco and Fundación EcoMinga in order to protect thousands of plant and animal species including Puma, Jaguar, Teagueia orchids and the cloud forests. You can find out more about these projects on the Ecuador reserves page.

Colombia

Local partner: Fundacion ProAves. Straddling the Equator and rising from the shores of the Pacific Ocean to the high Andean peaks, the Chocó region shelters one of the wettest tropical areas on earth. But in recent decades, road-building has resulted in urban expansion which is threatening the region. Colombia page.

Mexico

Local partner: Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda (GESG). GESG are co-managers (jointly with the Government) of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve in central Mexico. This area is one of the most ecologically diverse and important regions in Mexico as it is the meeting point of two bio-regions - the Nearctic from the north and the Neotropical from the south. Mexico page.

Guatemala

Local partner: FUNDAECO. WLT began a land purchase project with this NGO in 2009 to protect the wetland and rainforest habitat in the Laguna Grande Reserve. WLT has already helped fund the purchase of 1,658 acres (671 ha) which encompasses a system of lagoons, mangroves and tropical forests. Guatemala page.

A donation of just £25 to the above projects ensures the purchase of quarter of an acre. You can save wildlife acres in your own name, or as a gift for somebody else. Either way, WLT will send you a personalised certificate.
